Do I need planning permission for my windows and doors?

You don’t normally need planning permission to replace windows and doors and door frames in the original walls of your house if they're similar in size or appearance, unless you live in a Listed Building or are in a Conservation area.

However, you may need planning permission if conditions were attached to the original permission or if you want to install a new window opening that overlooks another building.

Double glazing can be installed in a house under Permitted Development providing the building isn’t listed or in a conservation area. However, planning permission may be needed if you are in a flat or a maisonette.

Occasionally, you may need to apply for planning permission for some of these works because your council has made an Article 4 Direction withdrawing permitted development rights.

Therefore, because conditions tend to differ from council to council, you're advised to check with your local planning authority to be sure.
