What are the issues around security for my new window or door?

Windows in new homes and conversions must meet the requirements of Part Q of the building regulations (which deals with security).

This helps to ensure that the design and construction of the window or door is robust, the glass is secure and that the locks meet the relevant standards to prevent unauthorised access by physical attack by a casual or opportunist burglar.

If you’re replacing windows you might like to consider meeting these requirements for peace of mind.

The regulations apply to a window or doorway, any part of which is within 2m vertically of an accessible level surface such as the ground or basement level, or an access balcony, or a window within 2m vertically of a flat or sloping roof (with a pitch of less than 30°) that is within 3.5m of ground level.

Window and door manufacturers can obtain third party certification on their product. Alternatively, they can build their door sets and windows to a pre-determined specification called PAS24:2016 or an equivalent standard which exceeds the requirements of Approved Document Q.
