Will my new extension need building regulations approval?

Project type

Save to list

Your extension will usually need building regulations approval.

However, if the extension is at ground level and consists of:

  • a porch
  • a conservatory
  • a carport open on at least two sides

…of less than 30m2 floor and area and separated from the house by an external type door and unheated, it’s exempt from the building regulations.

If in doubt, your local authority building control team will be able to help, and make sure you find out well in advance of your work start date.
