Established in 1991, OFTEC is a 'not for profit' trade organisation for the liquid fuel heating and cooking industries and operates a UKAS accredited competent persons scheme (CPS) covering all regions of the UK and Republic of Ireland. OFTEC registered technicians are trained and assessed to install, service and repair heating systems.
OFTEC registered businesses carrying out installation work in England and Wales can self-certify that this work is compliant with the local building regulations. Only businesses that can demonstrate they meet all the requirements of registration are authorised to join the OFTEC CPS registration scheme and become an OFTEC registered business. This includes passing independent assessments and successfully completing a business audit and regular site inspections.
In addition to the OFTEC Competent Person Scheme, registered businesses may also add further certification schemes through OFTEC, these include: Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), TrustMark, PAS2030, Electrical Part P
The scheme covers:
- Oil fired (liquid fuel) appliances including pressure jet and vaporising equipment such as boilers, warm air heating systems, stoves, cookers or room heaters.
- Installation of oil storage tanks and oil supply pipelines (also called liquid fuel storage tanks).
- Solid fuel appliances (stove, log burner, cooker) with or without connected hot water system.
- Woody biomass boilers.
- Ground source heat pumps (GSHP).
