What are the issues around the load on the floor for my bathroom?
Project type
Whether constructing a new bathroom, changing the use of a room to make it into a bathroom, or replacing a lightweight steel or acrylic bath with a heavy iron bath, the extra load needs to be considered.
Timber flooring, especially in older homes, may not be strong enough to support the extra weight and floor joists usually need to be doubled beneath baths and wall partitions.
A structural engineer or surveyor (who has professional indemnity insurance) will help decide if this is needed and provide calculations and a specification for the floor.
Building regulations approval may be needed if the floor has to be strengthened.
